Add option to use Portal TV inbuilt speaker as default output device.
I know that it is lower quality than the speakers in the TV, but it is good enough and is the only way we found for my parents to not hear the start of every one of their sentences repeated back to them.
It should be an option in the software to select audio output device and use the inbuilt speaker instead of needing to go through the TV as this would solve our problems for us. The only way we can currently do this is by attaching a bluetooth speaker to the camera (which repeats all audio back to the recipient), and then disconnect it mid call.
The speaker is there in the device, let us select it as default output if we want :) Thanks!

Extremely important feature. I use a monitor and the speaker is fine on voice calls but stops as soon as I plug in the HDMI for video - which means I can't use it for video!
REPORTED IN MAY 2020! NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE? No wonder you are second to Google. Such a simple product ruined because of lame updates and lack of input to supporting the software...

This would allow me to use my monitor and give it a new lease of life

This worked for the first few weeks. Now it only works through the TV channel. Alexa somehow works on the unit but won't play music. Useless.

Please add this feature. It is basically not useable because of the echo.

Literally everyone wants this. We need to be able to play Spotify and Amazon music through the built in speaker.

Surely this would be an easy thing for Facebook to do?
I love the Portal TV, but the echo cancellation is really bad if you try to use it with a TV speaker or sound bar. It's so bad that people I know have returned the device because the echo makes it unusable.
I've managed to persevere - I force the Portal TV to use the built in speaker by:
(1) Connect a bluetooth speaker to Portal TV
(2) start a Messenger call on Portal TV
(3) turn off the bluetooth speaker
(4) the Portal TV then defaults to its own built in speaker - which works PERFECTLY (no echo).Come on Facebook... we want this product to succeed, add an easy setting to resolve our issues!!

Music by Alexa will play through my Bluetooth speaker but only if I activate the TV input for Portal TV - which I can then disconnect!

I want to use portal to control my larger outdoor sound system, is that possible and how do I do it? Thanks!

Bump! This seems like an easily solved problem to something that plagues this device.

Sometimes we just want to listen to music on Spotify or Amazon and it would be great to hear it on the portal speaker instead of turning on the tv every time to listen to music

Common FB ... this echo is terrible doesn’t go away unless I turn of my TV, and when the internal speaker fires up and everything is fine.
Make this available as an option -

Is there any update? I think Portal TV handles echo very poorly and it constantly cuts the audio on the listener end, in order to prevent echo. This results in a half-duplex audio conversation.
I have seen slightly better results when the internal speaker is in use, that in my case happens when someone turns off the TV by mistake during a call.

+1 to this - would really like to see this feature. Should be an easy change, right?

Yes, the echo problem is terrible and sound works great on normal portal, so this could be a good interim solution

Bump. This is still an issue, if you are unable to properly cancel echo with software, PLEASE let us select the built in camera speaker as the default output device. It sounds perfectly fine for calls and is the only way to stop the recipient form hearing an echo of themselves :(
