Fix "half duplex" audio problems (cut outs)
This isn't as much of a suggestion as a bug report. The audio performance for the Portals, especially the Portal TV's, is very poor. The portal microphone mutes itself for a second when it picks up sound that came out of the speakers - resulting in half duplex (walkie talkie) style communication.
Participants then complain that it's "hard to hear". If you have a call where kids are in the room, or side conversations are happening, then there is going to be tons of random audio cut outs - making conversations painful or impossible.
The only work around is to use bluetooth headsets so the mic can't pickup the other caller's sound. You can't even use a bluetooth speakerphone with proper full duplex support because the portal doesn't support that.
That means you can either use the portal as a personal (one person per portal) device or use it as a video walkie-talkie.

Same. Portal TV version. Every second sentence cuts out. When on the home menu there's a audible pop in and out when you finish navigating. My TV is plugged into external speakers by phono. This shouldn't be happening.

Same issue here. We were going to buy everyone at our company one of these, but this issue has crushed that plan. Sticking with zoom. Will reconsider if there’s a positive update from Meta on this.

Bought one for my elderly parents in another state. Same problem you guys have described, but why would it have just started doing this recently? It worked fine several months ago. Now it is useless

I've had my portal for couple of years and recently been noticing this problem more and more. Contacted the helpline and have to laugh at their suggestions. The latest is that I reboot from factory settings then phone my granddaughter again. I keep telling them it isn't just me, I've sent them link to this thread.
This happens when I call anyone and it happens when my granddaughter calls any of her friends or they call her and when my son uses his to call or receive calls. They just aren't willing to accept its a design flaw.

Just discovered this issue as well. Toddler sitting with us, every time she makes noise (every second) it completely mutes my parents I'm talking to on the other end. Basically can't have a conversation with them at all. This is really stupid.

Same issue. The device is basically unusable. It’s more like a security camera than something for video calls with grandma

Folks, try going into your TV audio settings and turn off ALL features having to do with AGC, Dolby Atomos, "Smart Volume", and anything else that appears to be an "enhancement" to the TV's loudspeaker audio. I know this is not preferred since you may have particular settings you like. The reason to try this is because the TV's audio settings (AGC etc.) are unknown to Portal TV, which causes a particularly nasty problem for echo control. Portal TV can "adapt to" volume control changes, but any "smart audio" feature is a nonlinear operation that all widgets like Portal TV struggle with (Facebook's widgets or other companies' widgets). Anyway, give it a try if you're game, and good luck!

Device is almost unusable - the whole point was for my mom to VC with my toddler but because there’s a loud toddler we can’t hear a word mom says.

Was so excited to send this to my family living on another continent where portal is not sold officially. Great video conf experience but audio sucks to a point where my dad started losing his patience on this tech. I so badly want this to work seamlessly

I have a tv portal and my parents have a other portal (not TV). Video is great, audio really annoying due to the "half duplex(?)" So, recently I changed from using internal TV speaker to external speakers, connected to the TV. My parents say that on their end I now sound clearer. But the half duplex problem still happens. Is there some workaround? Does anyone have any experience with changing the audio output from TV internal to external speakers?

Same issue here. The portal is unusable. The only thing the thing does right is the video tracking. Audio is horrendous. Half the time I hang up the portal and use FaceTime instead.

Same issue here. We have stopped using our Portal TV as it is completely unusable with toddlers. Really disappointing and will be returning the product unless there is a fix.

Surely this would be an easy thing for Facebook to do?
I love the Portal TV, but the echo cancellation is really bad if you try to use it with a TV speaker or sound bar. It's so bad that people I know have returned the device because the echo makes it unusable.
I've managed to persevere - I force the Portal TV to use the built in speaker by:
(1) Connect a bluetooth speaker to Portal TV
(2) start a Messenger call on Portal TV
(3) turn off the bluetooth speaker
(4) the Portal TV then defaults to its own built in speaker - which works PERFECTLY (no echo).Come on Facebook... we want this product to succeed, add an easy setting to resolve our issues!!

I have the same half-duplex problem as well. I've bought 4 Portals (8", 10", and two Plus) to connect my family members. However, the microphone issue is extremely annoying! Although it seems no one will help with this here, I still want to comment. I won't buy any facebook hardware in the future because the quality is not good and the service is bad.

WHEN WILL THIS BUG BE FIXED? HONESTLY I BOUGHT ONE UNIT, AND WANTED TO BUY 5 MORE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS TO KEEP IN TOUCH DURING COVID. NOW, JUST WAITING FOR THE BUG TO BE SOLVED.

Another exact same situation - we bought two for us and my mother in law in Australia so she could see us and her grandson in the UK. Anytime my son (who is 1yr) makes a noise, even just him heavy breathing can do it and she cuts out! It's totally not as advertised! An update is seriously needed but doesn't seem to be coming!
